What You Should Know About Tubal Pregnancy

March 6th, 2007

tubal pregnancyA tubal pregnancy can be life threatening if it is not discovered early. There have been significant strides made in medicine that can detect a tubal pregnancy and the maternal death rates due to a tubal pregnancy are on the decline. Most tubal pregnancies are diagnosed before the eighth week of pregnancy. However, tubal pregnancies are on the rise.

A tubal pregnancy occurs when the fertilized eggs implants itself in the fallopian tube. It is important to note that an ectopic pregnancy can also occur in the cervix, ovary or abdomen. If a fertilized eggs starts to grow anywhere other than the uterus it will not properly develop. In addition, when the egg starts to grow it will stretch out the organ where it is implanted. If the egg has implanted itself in a fallopian tube it can burst. This greatly increases the pregnant woman’s risk of hemorrhaging and it could cause the mother’s death if medical attention is not sought immediately.

The symptoms of a tubal pregnancy will mirror that of a normal pregnancy. It can have the most common symptom of a normal pregnancy such as a missed period. However, a tubal pregnancy will have other symptoms such as pain in the abdomen, bowel or bladder, dizziness or fainting and irregular vaginal bleeding. If you are pregnant and start to experience pain in your abdomen you should seek out medical attention immediately.

One way that doctors can detect a tubal pregnancy is by evaluating the HCG levels of the pregnant woman. In tubal pregnancies the HCG levels will not increase at such a fast rate as in a normal pregnancy. Your doctor may also monitor your level of progesterone. Woman who have a tubal pregnancy often do not produce a normal level of progesterone. Women who have a tubal pregnancy will a lower than normal progesterone level. Another way that a tubal pregnancy can be detected is through an ultrasound. An ultrasound will give your doctor a view of your uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes.

A tubal pregnancy that is detected will normally be terminated. If left alone tubal pregnancies can cause the death of the mother. Tubal pregnancies are generally terminated with an injection of methotrexate. If this medication cannot be used for some reasons the egg can be removed through laparoscopy or be flushed out through a salpinostomy.

There are factors that can increase your chances of having a tubal pregnancy. These factors include having had a previous tubal pregnancy, becoming pregnant after the age of 35, having pelvic inflammatory disease, previous operations performed on your fallopian tubes, the use of certain medications, endometriosis, conceiving when an IUD was in place and there is a possibility that having multiple induced abortions may increase your chance of having a tubal pregnancy, although the evidence is still not clear.

You should know that if you have a tubal pregnancy it can affect your ability to get pregnant in the future. If you have experienced a tubal pregnancy you are at a higher risk for developing another one in the future. You may also have trouble conceiving if you have scarring or damage to your reproductive organs as a result of the tubal pregnancy. You should talk with your doctor about your personal situation and your changes of having a normal pregnancy in the future.

Baby Backpacks

February 26th, 2007

Whenever you go out with your baby to a shopping mall or to some crowed place it is very difficult to push the stroller around. This is where baby backpacks come in handy. They give the kids pleasure ridding on your back and helps you keep your hands free for shopping and taking care of other things.

Backpacks are similar to camping backpacks with a seat for your child. They come in different varieties with an aluminum frame that distributes your child’s weight evenly on your shoulders. You can put your child in the backpack as soon as he is ready to sit on his own which is around the age of 5-6 months. You may take some time before getting used to it. If it is not adjusted correctly the weight may not get distributed evenly as a result it may cause problem in your hip and legs.

Whenever you buy a backpack you look for following things in it.

Comfort: Make sure that pack is comfortable for you and your child. Try it with your child inside it to see if the weight is well distributed or not. Make sure that all the straps are well padded. The fabric should be soft enough not to make to his skin irritate. Also see if there is circulation of air.

Safety: Safety is another thing you should be looking in a backpack. You should be able to remove your child from the backpack comfortably. The backpack should have reflective strips in case you are out at night. But then you can add this feature if it doesn’t have.

Versatility: The backpack should have storage options with pockets for water bottles, diapers etc. Some may have loops for toys. Many backpacks have adjustable seats so that your child can use it as he grows.

Easy to use: The backpack should be easy to use. It should have stand so that it can prop it on the table while you get your child out of it. Check if the straps are adjustable enough to fit others who are going to carry it.

Clean ability: The fabric should be easy to clean. Some backpacks come with removable fabric so that you can wash it.

Post Delivery Issues

Even if they have to run additional tests on your baby, he’s probably healthy as can be. Many states require that certain tests are conducted on all newborns, so don’t be alarmed if your baby has to go through a whole battery of blood tests before you are both discharged. Sometimes your doctor may call in another doctor to get a second opinion on something, like examining the baby’s eyes for example.

More often than not the second doctor will say that there is no problem, and you should be pleased that your doctor has enough sense to bring someone else in for a peek. If there turns out to be any sort of test results which indicate problems then the medical staff should explain everything fully to you but if you don’t understand everything then certainly don’t be apprehensive about demanding clarification. You should leave the hospital with a complete understanding of your baby’s condition, and if you don’t understand then ask more questions until you do.

Sometimes labor results in a significant blood loss. You have probably already realized that due to the nature of what labor is all about there is inevitable blood loss involved. Sometimes, however, the bleeding is excessive or doesn’t stop quickly enough. This can be caused by any number of things, such as a placenta, which doesn’t detach properly. There are some instances where blood transfusions are necessary, but this is far from the norm. One woman tells of losing a lot of blood during labor but just under the amount required for a blood transfusion. Then, when she was helped to the toilet afterwards by the nurse she started to feel woozy, and promptly passed out while sitting on the toilet. Imagine her surprise when she came to and there she was, still on the toilet with a full staff of medical personnel surrounding her.

Your strength will be shot for a while. Even without significant blood loss, your body has just gone through a tremendously straining event. Don’t pick up that suitcase just yet, because you may be surprised at how weak you really are. Your strength will return slowly but surely, but be sure to give your body all the time it needs to return to normal.

You will undoubtedly be plagued at one time or another during your pregnancy by thoughts of all the things, which might go wrong during labor. Take a deep breath and remember that you are having your baby at the most medically advanced time in history. Most labors go smoothly and without major problems. In all likelihood you and your baby will be just fine.

Keep Your Child Healthy

February 1st, 2007

Let’s face it. Mostly everything that pack our grocery stores are full of processed foods including produce and dairy products pumped with growth hormones and sprayed with pesticides. This is a very unhealthy way to live and it has a negative impact on our children.

It is a fact that organic foods not only taste better and are higher in nutrients, but eating organic foods decrease the chances of developing certain types of cancers and other illnesses. Our children’s bodies are developing and it’s not worth putting them at risk of getting sick. Buying organic foods is more expensive, but the benefits outweigh the costs, and much of the cost can be saved if people considered growing organic fruits and vegetables in their yards or in containers on porches and patios.

You know it’s bad when your child comes up to you each day and asks you “What’s for dinner - McDonald’s or Taco Bell?” And then we wonder why our 100-pound daugther is wearing a size 36DD bra. Our children are inheriting the growth hormones that are injected into the chickens and cows whose eggs, milk, and meat pack the grocery stores and restaurants.

What can you do about it?

Change your lifestyle! This may be very difficult if you are not accustomed to buying organic foods and eating heathly in general. It must start with the parents. You are what you eat!

Start making changes to your family’s diet slowly but surely if you are starting fresh. Here are simple things you can do to give your child a healthy start in life.

Cut out carbonated drinks and sugary juices and replace them with organic 100% fruit juice with no sugar added. Buy organic foods whenever possible or grown your own. Limit dining out to once per month.

Take healthy snacks with you on the road in a cooler such as apple wedges, carrots, cheeses, and dips to give your children. Keep jars of organic baby food in the car.

Buy organic milk. It lasts a couple of weeks longer and you can be sure your child is not drinking the growth hormones that cows are injected to produce more milk!

Keep your refrigerator stocked with fresh foods. This will force you to serve healthy foods to your family and not the frozen stuff.

If you get your baby off to a “fresh” start, she will grow up with healthy eating habits and traditions.

Preschool

It is perfectly normal for children to become clingy as a side effect of separation anxiety. It is an important part of the development process. For the parent, a clingy child can be emotionally taxing as well as physically draining. Children that remain clingy for an extended period of time often have problems with it is necessary for them to be separated from their parents. There are some techniques for fostering independence in children.

Pay close attention to the times when the child is not being clingy. Notice what is going on to cause this feeling of independence. These are the things that you can include in your daily activities to help the child gain confidence. Encourage him or her to do more of these independent activities.

Whenever you have to leave your child, make sure that you say a proper goodbye. Many parents are tempted to leave abruptly because they know that saying goodbye will only cause tears. Saying goodbye helps your child to see that you mean what you say. Be honest with your child and let him know that you will be coming back. If the child is old enough to tell time, tell him the time that you will return. You can use other signals like a favorite television show or the end of naptime to help the child gauge your return. It is important that you return at the time you promise. This helps the child to see that you will come back when you say you are.

In situations where you will have to be separated from the child for a longer period time than you have before, it is helpful to build up to this time. For example, when children start kindergarten it is a good practice to start lengthening the amount of time that you and your child are separated. This helps the child become accustomed to being separated from you for an extended period of time.

A game of role reversal will prove to be effective in fostering independence in a clingy child. In this game you start clinging to the child rather than the child clinging to you. Grab onto him or her and say that you are never going to go away. Do this in a playful manner. Say something like “We are going to be together all the time. When I go to the bathroom and even when I cook.” It won’t be long before the child is playing right along with you giggling and asking you to leave him or her alone.

Another game that you can play with your child involves using a toy to demonstrate clingy behavior. Use one of your child’s toys, a stuffed animal or action figure. Attach the toy to the child in a sort of obnoxious way. Grab all the other toys and throw them across the room and say in a jealous tone “You only want to play with me, not with them”. The child will usually respond in an aggressive manner towards the puppet. This is all right. Just pick the toy back up and bring it back saying, “You accidentally hit me, but it’s ok, I’m back”. This will help the child to release some of the clinginess and dependency.

It is important that you do not become angry or irritated with your child’s clingy behavior. Keep in mind that this is a process that all children go through. At this point in your child’s life, you are the most important thing to him. It is only natural that he will want to be with you at all times.

Building your child’s security will help him to become comfortable being without you. Give him lots of love and attention. Cuddle up together. Play together. Spend quality time together. These are all things that let you know that your child that you love him. When you must be separated from your child, keep it to a short amount of time. Let your child get use to his babysitter or other caregiver before you leave him alone for a long time. Always keep your word and return at the time that you say you will. These tactics will all help to foster independence in your child
