A Better Prenatal Test

There may be safer ways of testing unborn babies for genetic diseases in the future. The current tests used, the amniocentesis, which involves using a needle to collect fluid from the amniotic sac surrounding the fetus causes a miscarriage in about one in every 100 cases, and Chorionic Villus testing, which takes a small sample of placental tissue also carries a risk of miscarriage in up to one percent of cases. Scientists have been trying to find ways to improve the testing process to eliminate the risk of miscarriage.

A team at the Chinese University of Hong Kong has found a way to find genetic markers for fetal DNA in maternal blood. This new finding could provide ways for new non-invasive tests to diagnose conditions in fetuses. It is very interesting. You can read more about it at news.bbc.co.uk
