Survival of the Fittest Preemie
Researchers at the University of Florida analyzed data from more than 5000 premature births and they came up with some interesting statistics. It turns out that black baby girls are more than twice as likely to survive if born at a birth weight of 2.2 lbs. or less than white baby boys of the same weight. Many babies of that size are just too small to make it on their own so many of those premature babies do die.
It turns out that baby girls of any race have an advantage over boys when born at a low birth weight but it also turns out that black infants have a slight advantage over white infants. But the higher the weights and developmental ages at birth, the higher the survival rate is for all babies.
