Breastfeeding For Working Moms
Moms who work outside of the home have a dilemma when deciding whether to keep breastfeeding or not after returning to work. In order to retain their breastmilk any mother must empty their breasts at regular intervals. When mom is home with baby this is a natural occurrence, but when a mom returns to work she must pump every 2-3 hours. This can be inconvenient for both the mom and the employer. Employers are becoming more sensitive to this issue and some are even offering “lactation programs” that include rooms to pump and break time to do so. Some states even have legislation in place that requires employers to provide accomodations for breastfeeding women. If you are a working mom and you would like to continue to breastfeed here are some useful tips to consider:
-Buy a quality electronic pump. They may be more expensive but they are much more efficient and easier to use. Especially if you are pumping several times during the day, the extra expense will be worth it.
-Talk to your employer about accomodations for breastfeeding mothers. It would be wise to look into your state’s current breastfeeding laws to be aware of your rights.
-Plan your breaks and times that you will pump ahead of time. Use an alarm if necessary to remind you when it is time to pump.
-Sometimes a combination of a good quality formula and breastmilk will work well for you and your baby, experiment with different formulas if this is something you would like to try.

Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for your baby so you should be applauded for your committment to continue to breastfeed after returning to work if you choose to do so. However if it doesn’t work out and it may not, don’t feel guilty. Many strong and healthy babies have been raised on formula and there are definitely some quality formulas out there.
