The fabric should be soft enough not to make to his skin irritate. Also see if there is circulation of air.
Safety: Safety is another thing you should be looking in a backpack. You should be able to remove your child from the backpack comfortably. The backpack should have reflective strips in case you are out at night. But then you can add this feature if it doesn’t have.
Versatility: The backpack should have storage options with pockets for water bottles, diapers etc. Some may have loops for toys. Many backpacks have adjustable seats so that your child can use it as he grows.
Easy to use: The backpack should be easy to use. It should have stand so that it can prop it on the table while you get your child out of it. Check if the straps are adjustable enough to fit others who are going to carry it.
Clean ability: The fabric should be easy to clean. Some backpacks come with removable fabric so that you can wash it.
