The Origins Of Halloween

It’s nearly Halloween again. Things are about to go bump in the night. Spook professionals would have you believe that the dead actually walk the ground on October 31st, Halloween is as much a story of specters and beings that do not exist that movies that we watch on television. For anyone curious, here is a story of the modern event named Halloween.

The history of Halloween

First of all, it was called All Hallows Eve. We are notµ speaking of Sleepy Hollow. Hallow signifies holy, as it is in The Lords Prayer for all the Sunday schoolers out there.

Old pagan beliefs, specifically the Celts, would observe different stages of the earth. One of those festivals was Samhain. It is pronounced saw-in. This was a festival that commemorated the spirits of the defunct persons. There was nothing wrong with this, except that they did not discriminate between the the good and the bad ones. Individuals commemorated each of the dead. The date that this festival fell on was October 31st.

Does it sound scary? Well, it is fundamental that you keep in mind that early pagan faiths were inclined to superstition as in the Middle Ages. They were frightened by spirits and believed they were capable to come back to the human world; which horrified them.

Time passed and priests of the religion would pray these soul of the dead so that people had their good will for harvest season. Peoples sustenance depended extremely on those harvests and they were afraid that the spirits would torment them and ruin the harvests.

The Christian church determined to combat such superstition by adding a bit of Christianity to the occasion. They they transferred the celebration of All Saints Day from March 13th to November 1st. People would hopefully be less afraid and more into the Christian festivity than the pagan one.

Everyone didn’t changed their ancestral credence nevertheless. Masses disguise their faces when they were walking the land at night hoping that any ghosts would think they would be companions and cancel their maleficence. They also used big sculpted turnips with candles inside as lanterns.

And then, All Hallows Eve became Halloween. The celebration of this festival evolved, children dress costumes to scare people silly and receive a bit of candy simultaneously.

Now that you have learn the chronicle of Halloween, it’s time for you to start preparing your future Halloween party, set up a theme, whether a creepy one or not, gather as many people as doable and think to go shopping for your new Halloween costume or produce it yourself.
